K2 & Co. is seeking a skilled communications and government affairs professional to join our firm’s public affairs team. K2 is a rapidly growing women-owned small business, dedicated to serving clients in the areas of public relations, public affairs, strategic communications, events, political campaigns, development, and fundraising.
As a Public Affairs Director, your job will include:
- Guiding client strategy, creating and executing strategic plans to accomplish client goals, meet contract deliverables, and aiding clients in navigating local, state, and/or federal politics
- Managing clients and meeting their day-to-day needs and contract deliverables
- An understanding and willingness to learn a variety of policy issues that reflect client priorities including healthcare, energy, agriculture, finance, etc.
- Utilizing current contacts and growing your grassroots and grasstop relationships with voices that elevate our client’s issues with the press, policymakers, and the public
- Building and managing coalitions for clients
- Crafting a variety of written materials for clients including press releases, opinion editorials, letters to the editor, social media posts, and more
- Pitching and building relationships with members of the press in state and national markets
- Providing media training for clients to grow their thought leadership and ability to communicate with the press
- Tracking metrics for clients including deliverables, social media, etc. to demonstrate achievement and momentum for clients
- Helping manage interns and junior staff on projects as needed
What you need to apply:
- A bachelor’s degree and a minimum 7 years of experience working in communications, public relations, media relations, and/or government affairs
- An understanding of Minnesota’s political landscape
- Strong written, verbal, and communication skills
- The ability to multi-task and an interest in working with a variety of clients in different issue areas
- An understanding of various social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- An interest in policy and political current events
- Experience working with and pitching members of the press
- A willingness to learn, ask questions, think on your feet, and collaborate with colleagues to deliver results for clients
- Standing relationships with lawmakers, third-party grasstop groups, and/or political organizations in Minnesota
Nice to have:
- Client management experience
- Experience managing junior staff
- Experience working with non-profits, associations, and/or coalitions
- Grasstop and grassroots relationships in other Midwest states outside Minnesota including IL, WI, ND, and SD
